Stainless Steel Grades for Architectural Applications

The most common stainless steel grades for architectural metal sheets include:

304/304L Stainless Steel Polished Sheets

NAM offers both 304 and 304L architectural sheet metals and plates. This grade, typically consisting of 18% chromium and 8% nickel, is well-known for its durability and corrosion resistance.

The 304 and 304L stainless steel options are similar, but 304L has lower carbon content, which enhances its weldability. This stainless steel grade is extremely popular and used in a wide variety of applications, both big and small.

316/316L Stainless Steel Polished Sheets

Our 316 and 316L stainless steel sheets and plates are designed to offer maximum sturdiness and longevity. This grade is well-suited to harsher, more demanding environments.

Typically, 316/316L stainless steel contains slightly less chromium, more nickel and the addition of molybdenum. If you need a high-quality stainless steel solution, we’ll provide a custom cut with the finish of your choice.

Comparing 304 vs. 316 for Your Project

Stainless steel in 304 grade is highly popular and commonly used for food industry applications, appliances, piping and more. It offers excellent durability and long-lasting strength for a wide variety of projects.

The most notable difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel is that the latter has increased corrosion resistance. If you are working in a medical, chemical or marine environment, 316/316L stainless steel can provide an extra layer of protection over the long term.

Polished Stainless Steel Finish Options

If you need a specific type of finish for your stainless steel, we can provide a solution that boosts both maintenance convenience and aesthetic appeal. At NAM, we’re equipped to provide custom finishes for each project depending on your needs. We also offer a variety of standard finishes you can choose from.

#4 Satin Metal Finishing

This refined and smooth satin finish is a versatile all-purpose option. Use it to highlight glass elements, woods, and other architectural features.

#8 Mirror, 8 Super Mirror, and High Polish Super 8

Achieve a mirror-like reflective shine with our specialized high-polish stainless steel. This finish is polished directionally, is virtually free of grit lines, and can be easily blended for fabrication.

Applications for Polished Stainless Steel

Polished stainless steel sheets and plates can be used in a variety of industries and applications. This practice is common for stainless steel products, as it can enhance cleanliness, shine and corrosion resistance. Some common uses of polished stainless steel include:

  • Interior architectural applications: Interior applications for polished stainless steel may range from walls and medical surfaces to home appliances.
  • Exterior architectural applications: Thanks to its corrosion resistance, stainless steel can be useful for outdoor architecture or applications that will require exposure to the elements. This may include piping or outdoor equipment.
  • Design and aesthetic applications: In addition to the practical benefits of low maintenance, longevity and safety, stainless steel polish can provide aesthetic appeal. Common aesthetic uses of polished stainless steel may include mirrors, automotive components, elevators, decor and more.
